We love traditional childrenswear and our designs are often inspired by vintage styles. One of the most time-honoured styles for children in Britain is the sailor suit. Worn by both girls and boys it has been popular since the second half of the 19th century and was made fashionable by a painting of the future Edward VII, aged only 4, sporting an extremely smart sailor suit. With the royal seal of approval, the sailor suit flourished both as school uniform and everyday wear and still looks perfect for sunny days by the seaside today.
For girls, we have ‘Emma’, a white short-sleeved dress with a classic sailor collar and toggle and trimmed with nautical navy stripes and a contemporary style with a full white skirt and navy bodice with straps tied in bows and complementary striped trims. Both these dresses are 100% cotton and available in ages 1/2, 2/3, 4/5, and 6/7 years. Boys are not overlooked with our linen shorts and top set – the short-sleeved top features a sailor collar and toggle and the shorts have mother of pearl buttons at the waistband. In a choice of pale blue and mint green, the sets are available in ages 1/2, 2/3 and 4/5 years.
If you are looking for a nautical themed gift, we have 40cm rag dolls in sailor suits too! The boy version wears a striped top and navy sailor trousers and the girl wears a white dress with an embroidered boat motif – both wear jaunty sailor hats. The rag dolls have cotton outers and are suitable from birth.
