EARTH DAY: End Plastic Pollution

take the plastic pledge

Happy Earth Day everyone!

Here at Powell Craft we are passionate about reducing our commercial waste. One of the biggest fights of today is plastic pollution. Not only is it impacting our waters and marine life, but also the food chain and our overall health. Around 300 million tons of plastic are sold each year and 90% of that is thrown away. To help do your bit for our planet, there are ways you can help reduce your plastic waste.

Here are my top 5 tips . . .

Powell Craft tips on how to reduce plastic

    1. Say ‘NO’ to straws – In America alone, 500 million straws are used every day. They are used for a few minutes and then discarded. Once in the environment, they never decompose but break up into smaller pieces. Small and light, they can end up lodged in the nostrils of sea turtles and perforating the stomachs of penguins. Can’t live without your plastic straws? Simply, purchase a reusable one. This isn’t the solution though. Corporations, like MacDonalds, need to take responsibility and reduce the amount of waste they create. By refusing a plastic straw it will help get the message across that they need to stop handing them out when you purchase drinks.
    2. Use a reusable coffee cup – Did you know that 100 billion single-use coffee cups are thrown away globally each year? A multitude of coffee cups can’t be recycled as they are lined with invisible plastic to make them waterproof. Some independent coffee shops have started serving coffee in compostable cups but a majority haven’t made the change. If you are not sure if your local coffee shop is using compostable cups, you can get your coffee fix by using a reusable cup. Some coffee shops will offer you a small discount to fill up your reusable coffee cup. Just think of the money you would save! All you need to do is to remember to carry one around in your bag.
    3. Drink tap water – In the UK alone, we get through 8 million single-use bottled water a year, with only a fraction being recycled. Luckily our government is taking note and more water refill stations will be popping up around the country making it a lot easier to use a refillable water bottle. Please don’t be tempted to re-use your Evian plastic bottle! A lot of the plastics used to make single-use bottles become toxic after multi-use and are not BPA safe!
    4. Swop your plastic toothbrush – Toothbrushes are hard to recycle as they are made from a multitude of materials (plastics containing crude oil and bristles made from nylon). The average human will use 156 toothbrushes in a lifetime. The solution? Non-plastic toothbrushes! I have been using The Environmental Toothbrush which is made from bamboo and love it! The quality is excellent and didn’t cost the earth (£3 at Brighton’s local health food shop, Infinity Foods).
    5. Stop buying food wrapped in plastic – Large supermarket chains have been wrapping fruit and vegetables in unnecessary plastic for a while now. It is convenient for shoppers to grab a non-recyclable bag of potatoes or a tray of tenderstem broccoli when they are on the go, but our laziness is hurting the environment. Most fruit and veg have their own natural wrapping and can be easily washed before eating. Selling an individual avocado on a little plastic tray wrapped in plastic is very unneeded. Marks and Spencer have taken note of this and started selling avocado unwrapped and with the barcode laser printed onto the skin, so no sticky labels needed. Ways you can help? Go to your local market or independent shop and buy local, seasonal, unpackaged fruit and veg! Tends to be cheaper and free from harmful chemical wrapping.

So there you have it! Our top 5 tips to reduce plastic waste. There are lots of other things you can do and you can find them here. If you have any tips on how to reduce plastic waste, please share in the comments below  🙂

Bumble Bee Nightdress

Do your children suffer from bad dreams? Then you should check out The Dream Pillow! Originally dreamt up by a 7-year-old girl, to help her little brother fight recurring bad dreams. The Dream Pillow encourages children to write down their hopes, aspirations and dreams on a ‘blank idea card’, which is then placed inside the pillow. They can then cuddle their soft, cosy pillow whilst creating a safe zone and a bedtime ritual, which all contributes to a restful nights sleep.

According to, up to 50% of children have nightmares significant enough to worry their parents. The Dream Pillow helps eliminate this, as it has been proven that a positive bedtime routine carried out for 2-4 weeks can reduce the frequency of bad dreams.

What do you think of Dream Pillow? They recently did a photo shoot using our nightwear and here are the results! If you would like to find out more about The Dream Pillow you can find them here

Ways To Get Outdoors This Fall!

Let’s get the kids away from the TV and the gadgets and get them outdoors! Don’t let this colder weather keep them in, or the thought they might get ill. In fact, according to the National Institute of Infectious Diseases there is no evidence that exposure to cold weather causes the common cold – so bundle up and get out there!

We have put together an array of fun ways to get the kids excited for being in the outdoors.

Scavenger Hunt

Why not head to the local park or to the beach and create a list of items your children can look out for to find and collect. If you have children that can’t read, why not use images to show what they need to find. Get them interested in the world around them by encouraging them to really notice their surroundings.

Why not then take the items you have found home and create some form of artwork with it – a collage, paint a stone, make an animal- a castle whatever their hearts desire using woodland items? They could then maybe take their creations to school for show and tell!

Check for local events

National Trust or woodland centres provide special activities throughout the year. So check your local newspaper or county website and checking what they have going on!

Enjoy your own outdoor Olympics

Creating your own outdoor Olympics could be lots of fun for the whole family as well as getting them moving and active. Who can win the 100m sprint to the beach? Obstacle course at the park? Who can throw the furthest? Get your children to come up with ideas for races or events and celebrate the winners of each event. (You could get medals from most pound stores or the party section in the Supermarket)

Geocaching is a great way to explore new areas and find some treasure. The idea is to download co-ordinates where the treasure is located and use a GPS device or mobile to locate it.  The treasure is usually a small container with a log book to sign to say you found it and if you’re lucky some contain little toys (Swaps) to take away!

Plant a garden

Gardening is a great family activity. That can help teach children about life-cycles, pollination and nutrition, just to name a few! Whether it’s in your own yard or a community garden – why not plant a garden with your child. One to benefit humans and wildlife.

Build a fort

No batteries, no instructions just a load of fun and satisfaction! Bushes, trees, blankets, cardboard boxes. Let your child’s imagination run wild! Why not have a picnic inside when all the hard work is done?

Go Berry Picking

Why not take the kids berry picking? Whether that be finding what you can on a walk or going to a berry farm. It can be lots of fun and when you get home to cook up a nice scrummy treat together with whatever you find – like a nice fruity crumble or pie!

We’d love to know how you encourage your little ones to get outdoors! Whether you’ve tried some of the above or have other ideas. Leave us a comment below 🙂

~Elderflower Cordial recipe~

Makes about 2 litres

  • About 25 elderflower heads
  • Finely grated zest of 3 unwaxed lemons and 1 orange, plus their juice (about 150ml in total)
  • 1kg sugar
  • 1 heaped tsp citric acid (optional)

Place the flower heads in a large bowl together with the orange and lemon zest.

Bring 1.5 litres water to the boil and pour over the elderflowers and citrus zest. Cover and leave overnight to infuse.

Strain the liquid through a scalded jelly bag or piece of muslin and pour into a saucepan. Add the sugar, the lemon and orange juice and the citric acid (if using).

Heat gently to dissolve the sugar, then bring to a simmer and cook for a couple of minutes.

Use a funnel to pour the hot syrup into sterilised bottles. Seal the bottles with swing-top lids, sterilised screw-tops or corks.

milk and honey is a collection of poetry and prose about survival. It is about the experience of violence, abuse, love, loss, and femininity. It is split into four chapters, and each chapter serves a different purpose, deals with a different pain, heals a different heartache. milk and honey takes readers through a journey of the most bitter moments in life and finds sweetness in them because there is sweetness everywhere if you are just willing to look.

The breakout novel from the critically acclaimed author of the short story collections Who I Was Supposed to Be and Why They Run the Way They Do— It is a dark, beautifully rendered, and gripping novel about coping, about coming-of-age, and about forgiveness. It is also a beautiful illustration of how one family, broken by tragedy, finds healing.

Have a blissful month of May.

Why not try out these natural food colourings for colouring your Easter eggs this year?

How to Make Naturally-Dyed Easter Eggs

Makes 1 dozen eggs

1 dozen hard-cooked eggs, room temperature, or white and brown eggs, preferably not super-fresh
4 cups dye liquid made from any of the following:

  • 1 cup chopped purple cabbage per cup of water — makes blue on white eggs, green on brown eggs
  • 1 cup red onion skins per cup of water — makes lavender or red eggs
  • 1 cup yellow onion skins per cup of water— makes orange on white eggs, rusty red on brown eggs
  • 1 cup shredded beets per cup of water— makes pink on white eggs, maroon on brown eggs
  • 2 tablespoons ground turmeric per cup of water — makes yellow eggs
  • 1 bag Red Zinger tea per cup of water— makes lavender eggs

1 tablespoon white vinegar per cup of strained dye liquid
Neutral oil, such as vegetable or grapeseed

Pour the amount of water you need for the dye you’re making into a saucepan — you can make 4 separate batches of different colors or 1 large batch of a single color; follow the ratios given above for each ingredient to make more or less dye.

Add the dye matter (purple cabbage, onion skins, etc.) and bring the water to a boil. Turn the heat down to low and simmer, covered, for 15 to 30 minutes. The dye is ready when it reaches a hue a few shades darker than you want for your egg. Drip a little dye onto a white dish to check the colour. When the dye is as dark as you like, remove the pan from the heat and let the dye cool to room temperature. (I put the pot on my fire escape and it cooled off in about 20 minutes.)

Pour the cooled dye through a fine-mesh strainer into another saucepan (or into a bowl then back into the original pan if that’s all you have). Stir the vinegar into the dye — use 1 tablespoon of vinegar per cup of strained liquid.

Arrange the room-temperature eggs in single layer in a baking dish or other container and carefully pour the cooled dye over them. Make sure the eggs are completely submerged.

Transfer the eggs in the dye to the refrigerator and chill until the desired colour is reached. Carefully dry the eggs, and then massage in a little oil to each one. Polish with a paper towel. Store the eggs in the refrigerator until it is time to eat (or hide) them.

Serve them up fancy on our gorgeous porcelain plates.

Check our full range of kitchen & dining here.

4 eggs

1 cup of milk (cows milk or any plant based milk)

2 tea spoons of vanilla extract

1 tablespoon of honey

1/2 cup coconut flour

1 teaspoon baking soda

1/2 teaspoon of sea salt

1/2 teaspoon of coconut oil or butter

Add whatever toppings you desire. We love the mix of fresh blueberries, gogi berries, shredded coconut flakes and honey.

  1. In a small bowl beat eggs until frothy for about 2 minutes. Mix in the milk, vanilla and honey
  2. In a medium-sized bowl combine the coconut flour, baking soda and sea salt and whisk together
  3. Then stir the wet mixture into the dry mixture until a beautiful thick consistency
  4. Heat a small pan over a medium-low heat with either your coconut oil or butter. Ladle a few table spoons of batter into the pan and spread lightly using the back of a spoon. The pancakes should be 2-3 inches in diameter and fairly thick.
  5. Cook for a few minuets on each side, until a lovely golden brown colour and flip and cook for an additional 2-3 minuets.
  6. Et voila- ready to serve. Add all the toppings you desire.

Six Fun Activities To Do Now Spring Has Come

All in all everyone seems happier in springtime, the sky is looking a lot less grey,  flowers are starting to sprout and there is also much more to do. We think that the best way to enjoy this magical time of year is to spend as much time outside as possible so here are six fun activities that are great for all the family.

A Blustery Walk In The Woods

Woodlands in springtime are enchanting, there are often bluebells amongst the dead leaves giving you the feeling that summer is on its way. There is lots of fun to be had in the woods from tree climbing, flower picking, and camp building. However, the sun isn’t always shining during the spring- especially in England so it’s probably best to come prepared for the weather. Have a look at our gorgeous rainwear collection, you are bound to find something fit for the woods.

Powell Craft Rainwear

Host A Garden Party

Do you or someone close to you have a birthday during the spring? Hosting a party in your garden is a great way to celebrate a springtime birthday. Not only does it minimise mess in your house but it leaves room for children to play outside while you enjoy the warmer weather. Worried about decoration? Bunting is brilliant for outside and, if you are feeling really adventurous you could make your own using our specially designed fabric. We do also sell ready made bunting but making your own can be a fun activity to try with children.

Fairy Print Fabric

Go For A Teddy Bear’s Picnic

Are you fed up of the kids running around inside all the time? Taking them for a Teddy Bear’s picnic is a brilliant way for children to play with their favourite toy and get out of the house at the same time. Have a look at our gorgeous collection of teddy bears you might find an extra guest that you want to invite…

Stroll Along The Seafront

If you are nearer the seaside than the woods then walking along the beach is the perfect way to spend a Saturday afternoon especially if you have a newborn. The sound of the sea often calms down anxious children and the ocean air is great for clearing away any nasty bugs that are still lingering from the winter. Although, don’t forget to wrap up warm- it can get very windy. Our traditional pram blankets will keep your little one nice and cosy.

Make A Fairy Garden

Sometimes it can be too hectic to organise a big day out. So, playing in the garden can be just as fun especially if you want to do some gardening yourself. Children can often find their own garden a bit boring but, if there is a fun activity involved like building a home for the garden fairies, it can keep them occupied for hours.

Have A Sleepover

Kids burn a lot more energy when they are playing outside, so after all the fun daytime activities it can be nice to have a quiet evening in. Make sure you’ve got a classic Disney film, plenty of snacks and some cosy pyjamas, then you are good to go. We’ve got a wonderful range of nightwear for both adults and children… you never know, you might want to join in on the fun too!

Five Steps To Hosting The Perfect Tea Party

Most people will agree that the two major elements to hosting a tea party are tea, and lots of cake. However, hosting the perfect tea party takes time and preparation, and the key to a great one is creating the right atmosphere. Here are some quick steps you can follow to make sure that your party goes according to plan.

Step One: The Right China To Serve Your Tea
Don’t underestimate the power of having great china. You don’t necessarily have to have matching china but sticking to a colour scheme is probably a good idea. Subtle pastel colours like powder blue or pink work nicely for a tea party and, go very well with cake icing. Have a look at our Trafalgar porcelain range we’ve got everything, from sugar bowls to teapots that can make your table stand out. Dainty teacups like these are also great for serving loose leaf tea which will make your table seem even more luxurious.

Trafalgar Tea Cups

Step Two: A Variety Of Cake
You can forget the tea, we all know that the real reason people host tea parties is so that they can justify eating copious amounts of cake. If you are not much of a baker then simple cupcakes or biscuits with fancy icing will fool people into thinking that you were a finalist in last years Bake Off. If you are quite good with a whisk and spatula you could try catering for your friends who can’t normally eat cake, maybe some gluten free brownies or an egg free carrot cake. More importantly, the way you present your cakes will add to the whole ambiance of your event, our
powder pink cake stand will look stunning on your table.

Vintage cake stand

Step Three: Plenty of
Remember, you are hosting a party, therefore decoration is a must. Something that works perfectly for daytime events like a tea party is bunting. Traditionally it’s used to decorate outside areas for things like village fetes. However, it can also look fabulous inside, and give you that summery feeling if you decide to host your tea party in the winter time. Bunting is also a brilliant way to portray what your tea party is celebrating. Bank holiday or birthday party, you are bound to find a style of bunting to fit the occasion.
Union Jack Bunting Step Four:  Having Appropriate
Table Decor
If you want to follow the more traditional style, lace is crucial to creating a perfect table setting. Doyleys are having a comeback, they are no longer something that sits on your great grandmother’s mantle piece but a key ingredient in creating that vintage style. Lace also looks beautiful with flowers which, are a must. Have a look at our gorgeous handmade lace table cloths and create the perfect vintage spread.

Vintage Lace Doyley

Step Five: Making it Child Friendly
Tea parties are great for family parties because they are almost always in the daytime, which means there will be no late nights and the children can enjoy the party just as much as the adults. It’s always good to have things to keep the children occupied, maybe some playground games for outside, or if it is cold you could create place settings for the children and their toys. Our rag dolls make the perfect tea party companion for any little girl or boy.

We also have cotton knit appliqué tops which look wonderful when worn with the dresses.
